Making Your Home More Energy Efficient

Homeowners everywhere are constantly looking for ways to make their home more energy-efficient. Not only is it a great way to cut down on your energy bill spending, but it is also part of being environmentally responsible.

We have compiled five of our favourite ideas that you can take advantage of to turn your home into an energy saving household!

1. Change Your Light bulbs

This is a super quick and easy change to make to your home that will save energy. Upgrade your light bulbs to either LED or CFL light bulbs. Compact Fluorescent lamp (CFL) light bulbs can save three-quarters the energy than a regular incandescent. LED light bulbs do not contain mercury and are very long lasting. For example, an incandescent bulb can last around 1000 hours, CFL bulb may last around 8000 hours, and an equivalent LED bulb may last around 25000 hours.

As a result, the upfront cost of upgrading your light bulbs to LED or CFL will be substantially made up on the life span of your light bulbs and the energy savings.

2. Wash Laundry with Cold Water

Energy Star reports that nearly 90% of the energy consumed by your washing machine goes to heating the water. It is worth mentioning that a common belief is that cold water doesn’t clean your clothes as well as warm water. This isn’t entirely true, plus you can purchase cold water specific detergents that do a better job at cleaning your clothes than if you used ordinary detergent for your clothes in cold water. The price difference is minimal, and the energy bill savings you will accumulate will justify the cold water detergents.

When drying, separate out your light and heavy garments because they take different amounts of time to dry. Another useful tip is to not over-dry your clothes; take them out while they are still slightly damp to reduce the need for ironing and avoid garment shrinking.

3. Upgrade Your Thermostat

Upgrading your current thermostat to a programmable thermostat is an excellent way to save on energy costs. A programmable thermostat gives you the ability to set the temperature of your home based on your own schedule. If you are at work from 9am to 5pm, why have your house heated when nobody is there? With a programmable thermostat, you will save money by having your home at the ideal temperature only where you are actually there to enjoy it. Another fabulous feature about these thermostats is the ability to turn it on vacation or “hold” mode when you are out of town for a period of time. Programmable thermostats on average cost between $100-300 depending on which model and features you choose to have, so make sure you do research into which thermostat will work best for you and your home.

4. Unplug Your Home Office and Unused Electronics

A common misconception with electronics is that when you aren’t using them and they remain plugged in they aren’t drawing any power. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Idle electronics and appliances (like your toaster) are quietly draining electricity throughout the day. This also includes electronics like your TV and computer when they are powered off.

The reason being is that electronics typically draw standby power, which is the power consumed by devices when they are switched off or in a mode of standby. The good news is that this kind of power draining can be easily put to a stop.

Use a power bar or power strip that has an on/off switch on it. When you have your electronics plugged into one of these, you can turn off the power of your electronics and appliances and they won’t be able to continue to draw additional power. Alternatively, you can simply unplug those devices when you are no longer using them. This method can be a bit of a pain for certain electronics if they are plugged into hard to reach places, but for something like your toaster it can be a simple fix to stop the power drainage.

5. Draft Proof Your Home (new windows, check seals, etc.)

Set time aside to perform a walk around inspection of your home. Look for things like cracks around your windows, electrical outlets where you can feel a draft coming through, and drafty door frames or attic hatches. Stand next to your windows and see if you can feel the cool air passing through them. Consider using caulking and insulation to help seal up those problematic drafts.

If that does not do the trick, you should look at replacing those energy-leaking windows with windows that contain argon gas and low-emissivity (Low-E) glass to save on heating bills. Low-E glass can keep heat in during the winter and out during the summer, greatly reducing your annual heating and cooling costs.

In addition to managing heat, Low-E glass is also excellent at blocking the sun’s ultraviolet rays. If left unchecked, UV rays can eventually cause your drapes and furniture upholstery to fade, leaving you with unattractive and old-looking home décor. In order to keep your furniture beautiful for years to come, consider investing in energy-efficient vinyl windows with Low-E glass. Vinyl windows are also highly resistant to dirt, stains, and scratches, which means that they’ll stay beautiful for a long time to come.

At Centra we offer windows complete with argon gas and Low-E glass.

Not all windows are created equal. Selecting the wrong glass for your home is as helpful as selecting eyeglasses that have the wrong prescription. The windows might look great, but they won’t get the job done.

Glass technology has come a long way over the years and knowing how these coating features work can benefit your windows, maximize the comfort levels in your home and save you time and money. LoE coatings are a microscopic coating of silver that is applied to the inside surface of the glass and reflects heat back to its source. Its primary focus is how it retains the heat within your home, reducing your heating costs.

Sound Minimization Test

One of the clearest signs that you need to replace your windows is decaying window frames.

As wooden window frames are exposed to moisture, they can begin to go on a downward spiral.

Built-up moisture can also cause serious decay down the road, causing severe safety issues. You may also notice that you have windows that are leaking, otherwise known as leaky windows. In some cases, your windows may be leaking so badly that they are leaving a pool of water on your floor. Yikes!

Have you heard about the Government Window Rebates?!

The BC Government is offering up to $100 off per window in rebates. Centra has 48 unique product configurations that qualify for the Government Rebate Program.

Why use the Rebate to upgrade your windows?

Free money! The rebate program is designed to cover some of the costs when upgrading your home to energy-efficient windows so that you have the ability to experience longer-term cost savings.

Long Term Energy Bill Savings! The major benefit of energy-efficient windows is a significant reduction in your heating and cooling costs for your home. These energy bill savings are not just one-time savings, but rather you will see these savings on your energy bills every month for years to come.

Do you live on a busy street, near an airport or close to the train tracks?

Single-pane windows, or even low performance double-pane windows, will transfer sound vibrations from the street into your house. Before you know it, all the noise will add up and you can wave goodbye to the peace and quiet. The best energy-efficient windows will absorb these sound waves before they enter your home.

A great way to improve sound reduction for a window is with the asymmetric double glazing method. To put it in simpler terms, different thickness of glass impacts the reduction of noise across a wide range of frequencies. When a sound wave travels through the window and passes through the first pane of glass, it will change direction. Then it hits the second pane of a different thickness and it will change direction again. This process is how sound reduction and deflection happens. Now that’s neat!

For our fellow geeks out there, Asymmetric double glazing is where we use different thicknesses of glass to reduce the acoustic noise passing through the window into your home. Using 4mm and 6mm glass is both cost effective and high performing. With 4mm and 6mm glass you retain full functionality of LoE coatings on your window and they can be Government Rebate qualifying.

The most important thing to note is that sound will travel by the easiest means possible. To learn more, visit our Window Geeks blog

Moisture Test

Upgrading your windows is a major step towards improving the energy efficiency of your home. It’s also important to understand what a U-value means. U-values measure how effective a material is as an insulator. The energy efficiency of windows is measured with a ‘U-value’ and the lower this value is, the better.

If you live in a warm climate, energy-efficient windows will limit the transfer of heat through the glass, meaning your home stays cooler in the summer.

Heat Repulsion Test

Heat Insulation Test

One of the main reasons people replace their windows is to improve energy efficiency, resulting in lower cooling costs and more comfortable living year-round.

To provide optimal energy efficiency, meaning your home stays warmer in the winter, it is important for you to familiarize yourself with the Glass Coatings available to you and their benefits.

With a climate that is often demanding, playing with the amount of LoE coatings allows you to select the combination that suits your climate and maintain a comfortable temperature throughout your home.

This is when Low Emissivity (LoE) coatings enter the discussion. LoE coatings are a microscopic coating of silver that is applied to the inside surface of the glass that reflects heat back to its source, the sun, reducing your cooling costs in the summer.

Your glass can really make a difference to the performance of your windows and Centra can help you find the right fit for your home. The glass options you select can affect energy efficiency, provide greater clarity, filter out specific kinds of light, and even provide reduced maintenance, especially if you hate cleaning windows. Centra offers an extensive selection of glass options. You can be sure to find the right option for your home and the climate you live in.

These glass packages represent the most commonly requested options. Additional glass options are available upon request. Neat Glass is now standard on single-family supplied and installed Centra Windows. Neat Glass is available for an additional charge on a supply only orders and on patio doors. We can meet all the climate requirements in Canada.

The image below was taken by the FLIR thermal imaging camera and shows the differences between various LoE coatings when they are exposed to heat sources. From left to right, the image depicts the amount of heat that is transferred through the window glass in your home.  The darker red the image is, the poorer the performance of that glass in reflecting heat back to its source. Vice versa, the darker green/blue the image shows, the LoE coatings reflecting heat away from the glass.

Now that’s neat!

You may run into a scenario when you cannot remove the sliding frame on your window or the tracks when you would like to clean.  Whether the window is too high for you to reach or you have a screen that is not coming off, knowing how to correctly remove a sliding window will come in handy. Learn these techniques so you don’t have to worry about potentially damaging your frames. When completed successfully, it’s a great opportunity to maintain, inspect and clean the frames from the inside. Check out the video to learn the tips and tricks on how to remove and clean sliding window tracks and frames.

Our videos are funny, but we take our testing really seriously. Our Geek squad tests our windows through our customized hurricane testing water station. Each window is tested for air leakage, water pressure, structural strength, air infiltration and a host of other tests depending on the product specifications. The device depressurizes the chamber and provides our team with exact details to ensure the window is approved for installation.

Moisture fuels the growth of mold, despite how little water there may be. Think about it this way, your leaking window is a problem but it’s not the problem. Moisture built up on your windows is a symptom of something more significant. The only way to truly fix leaky windows and ensure that the windows won’t fail again is to replace them.
